While the book of Judges largely highlights the external threats Israel faced as a consequence of their unfaithfulness to the Lord, the book of 1 Samuel opens by exposing Israel’s internal threat, the corruption festering within its own priesthood. It was this deeper internal rot, this contempt for the Lord’s offerings, that consistently caused Israel to collapse under the weight of its external enemies. The church today would do well to learn from this pattern.
