The phrase “batting a thousand” refers to achieving the highest possible batting average in Major League Baseball. It can be used sincerely to commend excellence or sarcastically to highlight complete failure. When you look closely at King Saul’s life, the expression fits both ways. In 1 Samuel 11, Saul appears to be “batting a thousand” in a positive sense, responding with courage and leadership. Yet as his story unfolds throughout the rest of Scripture, the same phrase becomes tragically ironic, for Saul repeatedly “bats a thousand” in the wrong direction. He consistantly misses God’s heart, resisting His word, and ultimately unraveling under the weight of his own disobedience.
